University of San Carlos is known to be one of the top schools in Cebu and the Central Visayas in terms of academics. It is also the oldest school in the Philippines to have been granted university status. Established in 1595 and then known as the Universidad de San Yldefonso, USC was granted university accreditation in 1948. USC also prides itself of a rich basketball tradition.

Ramon Fernandez, probably the greatest player to have played in the Philippine Basketball Association once wore the green and gold jersey before turning pro and raking in 4 PBA MVP awards, one of only 2 players to achieve the feat, the other being Alvin Patrimonio.

Julian Macoy, a 5'11" guard from Dumanjug in the southern part of Cebu province scored 126 points in one game in the 1950's and 101 on another occasion. His #6 jersey has been retired by USC.

Other prominent Carolinian ballers were Nene Palmares of MICAA's Seven Up(1960-64), the 6'5" William Yu of MICAA's Yutivo Opels(1970), and Ernesto Morales of Yutivo Opels(1961-63) and RP Team to the Under Six Feet Tournament in Madrid.
